Around 1.5 million women in the UK are currently living with Endometriosis; a condition in which cells like the ones in the lining of the womb (uterus) are found elsewhere in the body.
Each month these cells react in the same way to those in the womb, building up and then breaking down and bleeding. But unlike the cells in the womb which leave the body as a period, this blood has no way to escape.
This causes painful or heavy periods, intense abdomen pain, fatigue, depression and can also lead to infertility, and bowel and bladder problems. Endometriosis is a life-long condition and can drastically effect the way suffers live their lives; especially when the severity of pain can lead to being bed-bound.
Whilst there is currently no cure for Endometriosis, various surgical and hormonal medication treatments are available to help mitigate the pain and discomfort felt. Neither are without their side effects, however, and both can seem very drastic approaches for those who prefer healing their body more naturally.
